Style vs Length

If you had a choice to pick, would you choose style or length for your hair? Most would say both but it's usually not that easy with natural hair. Let's discuss why.

Contrary to popular belief, natural hair is very fragile and more prone to breakage more than any other hair type. The tighter and kinkier your curls are, the more susceptible it is to breakage. Many Black women are ignorant of this fact and assume since their hair is thick and dry it automatically equates to their hair being coarse and resilient. I discussed this in a previous post so you can check that out. I say all this to say that once you understand this fact, you will be able to adapt to your hair better. Through this understanding, we are able to determine if we want our hair to be long or if we want the flexibility of styling it however we please.

I know you are probably saying, "I don't see what the big deal is. I want to be able to do whatever I please with my hair and for it to be long!" I wish it was like this too but for the most part, if you have type four hair, it is very difficult and almost impossible to have it both ways. Let's discuss the pros and cons of each.

Style

Pros

  • ability to dye hair whatever color and whenever you please
  • ability to straighten or curl whenever you please
  • ability to create extrinsic styles
  • ability to use whatever types of products
  • ability to use hair tools frequently

Cons

  • hair usually does not grow past collarbone or neck length
  • hair endures cuticle, mechanical, heat, and chemical damage
  • more trims

Length

Pros

  • hair has the ability to grow to terminal length (aka very long!)
  • hair is in its optimal health
  • mind conforms to what hair wants and needs instead of the other way around
  • natural curl pattern enhances
  • hydrated hair

Cons

  • routine styles and regimens
  • lack of flexibility to explore different options
  • can get boring if you don't like consistency

So, those are some of the ways length and style differ. What do you think and what's your preference? Let me know in the comment section below!
